What to include
You do not need anything formal. These four things make the first reply useful rather than a list of questions:
What you do, in a sentence.
What you want the site to do — bring in enquiries, sell something, replace something that is broken.
Roughly when you need it, and whether anything is fixed to a date.
A rough budget range. People dislike this question and it is the fastest route to a straight answer, including the answer that a platform builder would suit you better.
What happens next
Placeholder: response time and next step.
The first conversation is about your business rather than about design — what you sell, who buys it, and what you want to change. That usually settles whether a custom build is the right answer, and sometimes the answer is no.
If you are not ready yet
That is fine, and there are two things worth doing before you talk to anyone, me included.
Write one sentence about what the site is supposed to do. Bring in enquiries, let people buy without emailing, stop the same five questions arriving by phone. If you cannot write it, that is the most useful thing to discover now.
Start on your words and photographs. Both take longer than anyone expects, and they are what delays almost every project.
If you want to arrive prepared, there is a list — an hour on it shortens the whole project.
