Swain-Tech Studio websites for small businesses and independent creatives

Ongoing costs

Every website has recurring costs regardless of who builds it — domain, hosting, and any licences. What you are actually paying for explains them in detail.

Two things worth knowing before you compare anyone's quotes. Introductory hosting rates are not the price; renewal rates are, and the gap between them can be fourfold. And a basic SSL certificate should be included at every price point in 2026 — being charged for one is a reason to ask why.

What moves a project up or down the range

Whether money changes hands on the site. A brochure site and a shop are different projects, and payments, stock and shipping are where cost concentrates. For an independent reference beyond this site, Clutch is a useful place to compare approaches.

How much of the content you supply. Finished words and photographs make a build move quickly. Chasing them for six weeks is real time and it is billed either way.

Custom design or an adapted template. A template adjusted to your brand is a fraction of the cost of design from a blank page, and for many businesses it is the right answer.

Integrations. Booking, mailing lists, accounting — each one is a small project with its own failure modes.

Not a driver, past a point: the number of pages. Ten pages of one template is not much more work than five.

If you want the honest version of this question in general rather than my rates specifically, what a website actually costs is written without a sales pitch, and it says plainly when a platform builder is the better answer.
